This morning I made the final line of stitching on the dress that i am making for a friend. I have been working on it for quite some time now and I am happy to say that it is DONE!!! It is based off of Vogue 8727 and made with a shiny purple fabric. The entire thing is lined in white. Don't mind the wrinkles.... I am not an ironing master so I am letting the recipient take care of that part.

Busy, Busy, Busy
It's been a while since I have written my last blog. I have been quite busy with summer classes, work, my trip to Asheville, North Carolina, and of course, crafting. I didn't get in as much sewing as I had hoped this summer. I finally got started on some awesome new projects only about a month ago, and now school has started. Yippee. Hopefully I have a little free time to work on them amid the craziness of the 4th-Year High Rise Project. Although designing a skyscraper sounds quite time-consuming. Anywho.....
My latest project I made was a Batman skirt. I used a bedsheet I found at the thrift store and the wasitband from an old sweatshirt. I also added a small felt batman symbol to the waist of the skirt. It has a hi-low hem. I absolutely love it!
I've also got an Etsy store in the works right now, but before I can actually open it I have to get some examples made of the things I want to sell. So hopefully I get it up and running soon because I am so excited!

Design Green, Win Green Contest
My local mall is having a Design Green, Win Green contest to celebrate it's 40th anniversary and I decided I wanted to enter. Who can resist a grand prize of a $1,000 mall gift card?! The rules were to create a fashion item that is made of recycled or repurposed materials. I already had a project I wanted to try that would fit the contest perfectly, a pop tab skirt.
The skirt took quite a bit of time to complete since I had to weave through each tab individually. I started by making long chains of tabs and then connected them all together to make a sort of pop tab fabric. To give the skirt a bit of structure (as well as to keep it from being see-through) I attached the pop tab fabric to a base skirt made from an old t-shirt. The final touch was an elastic waistband made from part of an old tank top. I also created a top to go with the pop tab skirt from an old ankle length skirt. Sadly I forgot to take process pictures.

Pin-Up Style Dress
I would like to kick-off my new blog with a post about one of my favorite projects that I have completed to date, a pin-up style dress. This dress took a lot of time to create since I was only using a pattern for the basic form of the dress and I had to fudge all the other little details myself. This is also only the second dress I have ever sewn in my life, but I think it went pretty well and I really enjoy wearing it. So without further ado, pictures!
The completed dress. Probably could have used some ironing, but oh well. |
